How we can help

Our goal is to empower individuals who have unique communication needs. We do this by providing customized therapy experiences, education for families, and sharing resources to help build abilities. We’ve equipped our clinic with materials to create a fun and positive environment to serve your family and our community. After each session, families are briefed on their progress and are provided with activities to continue language development at home.

Receptive and Expressive Language

Receptive language refers to understanding language whereas expressive language refers to using verbal or nonverbal means to communicate needs, wants, ideas, and thoughts with others.

Does your child have trouble following directions or answering questions? Does your child have a difficult time expressing oneself despite showing a good understanding of what is being said to him or her? Does your child have trouble putting words together to make sentences?

If you answered yes to any of these, your child may benefit from a speech/language evaluation. We can determine your child’s language strengths and areas of improvement through comprehensive assessment, and then help by carrying out a therapy plan unique to your child’s individual needs.

Articulation

Articulation refers to the way we produce speech sounds. We can expect young children to make speech sound errors as they develop their language skills. These sound errors should start to resolve at certain times in their development.

Your child may benefit from speech therapy to address articulation concerns if they have trouble being understood by family members, friends, or their teachers.

We can assess your child’s speech skills to determine if speech errors are age appropriate. If your child demonstrates errors that should not be present considering his or her age, we can help get your child up to speed with producing clearer speech.

Motor Speech

Motor speech refers to the planning and coordination necessary to successfully produce speech. Dysarthria and apraxia are the 2 primary motor speech disorders. With these conditions, the connection between the brain and speech is interrupted and this makes it difficult for a person to control the muscles necessary for producing clear speech. Muscle weakness occurs with dysarthria, but not with apraxia.

We can help address these conditions in therapy by strengthening speech muscles, training on strategies to increase clarity of speech, and implementing techniques to improve speech coordination and sound sequencing.

Fluency

Fluency refers to the smoothness and rate of speech. Everyone is disfluent from time to time. If you pay attention, you would notice that you sometimes use fillers like “umm” or repeat certain words or phrases.

Stuttering is the most common fluency disorder characterized by repetitions (repeating of sounds, syllables, or words,) prolongations (prolonging of sounds,) and blocks (inability to initiate sounds in speech.) Stuttering can be accompanied by observable tension, secondary behaviors such as eye blinking, and avoidance of speaking situations.

We can help by training on various strategies and techniques to manage stuttering behaviors.

Social Language and Pragmatics

Pragmatic language refers to using language in social situations. Pragmatic language skills include a number of skills that are important for making and keeping friends, engaging in various social activities, and working with others.

Children may benefit from speech/language therapy with focus on pragmatics if they have a hard time taking or waiting for turns in conversation, difficulty with maintaining conversational topics, trouble with understanding indirect language such as idioms, or difficulty with other social language skills.

We can help your child to build the social language skills they need to be successful in their everyday interactions with others.

Yes, we can assess and treat adults with diagnoses of aphasia, dysarthria, and cognitive-communication disorders.  We do not provide services for dysphagia (swallowing disorders.)

We will spend about an hour with you and your child.  This assessment includes a standardized test, observation through play, medical history information, and a caregiver report. Through the evaluation, it will be determined if treatment is necessary, and if so, an individualized treatment plan will be created for your child. Treatment cannot be initiated unless an evaluation has been completed.

You will need to submit the report to us. Our speech therapist will determine if the report is acceptable. If the report is deemed to be acceptable, you will not have to redo the evaluation. Book an appointment with one of our therapists to get started.

We do not do home visits, but provide teletherapy as an alternative, convenient access to therapy services at this time.

A Speech Language Pathologist is a highly trained professional who evaluates and treats children and adults who have difficulty with speech, language, or feeding/swallowing.
